Ask someone you mutually know to ask them.
I’m taking a break from writing legal stuff to throw a warning to Muslims in academia who laud… let’s call them… “questionable” authorities on the study of Islam. They tend to advocate opinions that satisfy the Western [and liberal (that’s classic liberalism, ps)] appetite for rebellion against “orthodoxy.” These figures thrive because the “orthodox” scholars in America seldom engage with academia, while the pillars of Islamic study in traditional spaces rarely concern themselves with English discourses.
This has led to the creation of faulty premises and blanket statements on “orthodoxy” and what constitutes “tradition.” The characterizations of the aforementioned categories generally fall within the imagined evils of Orientalism fueled fantasy. They are allowed ample space to grow due to the absence of “orthodox” and “traditional” scholarship from the discourse, the premium placed on fetishized areas of study vis-a-vis Islam, and the ability of these new-found “authorities” to effectively utilize Western cultural norms to communicate their inaccurately based premises and assertions due to superior “packaging.” Unsurprisingly, these “authorities” also are awarded academic positions that bestow an authority they do not possess and shield them from questions critiquing their faulty assertions, but even worse, these positions remove questions over their inadequate training from the table.
In short, just because the discourse (in the West) on Islam is dominated by a fixation on the obscure (whether that is hyperized forms of “conservatism” or “liberalism”) and that it is reinforced due to the absence of alternate authorities who are unable (or refused the chance) to communicate and participate in this discourse, doesn’t mean that change isn’t around the corner. These authorities know it, too, that’s the best part.
We’re coming.

Does anyone realize that there were lectures the Prophet (pbuh) would give to women only? Or that Aisha (ra) would address men and women at the same time in many of her speeches? Or that literally there is no precedent in the sunnah for having segregated mosques? Or do we take the Prophet (pbuh) as an exception to the rule? Because if it’s his life we are claiming to try and follow in the footsteps of, then we can’t pick and choose what we like from his sunnah.

Salaam Lena, I'm sorry if you've answered this question before but I can't seem to find it on your blog, but are you from Houston?? Nice blog btw! :)
I’m done with this website.
But waalaykom assalaam because I have to answer salaams.
I really don’t understand who would take the time to ruin someone else’s name.. And so fervently and consistently. Whoever they are, it’s obvious that they know that everything their saying about ARM is slander. Why else would they be trying so hard? Just why?? Well, we know where you live now.
