Jack Nicholson, an American actor, screenwriter, director, and producer, is considered the greatest actor in the history of cinema. Born on April 22, 1937, in New York, Nicholson's mother, June Nicholson, was a dancer, and his biological father is still a subject of debate. His mother's partner, Donald Furcillo, or June's manager, Eddie King, could potentially be his father. Nicholson was unaware of his true parentage until later in life when he discovered that his older sister was actually his mother, who had deceived him to protect her reputation.
At school, Nicholson was mischievous and paid little attention to his studies. However, he excelled in amateur theater and became known for his ability to make funny faces. After graduating, he pursued his dream of becoming an actor but struggled to find success. He worked odd jobs at MGM Studios while attending acting classes.
Nicholson's breakthrough came with the film "Easy Rider" (1969), where he played a young lawyer torn between societal norms and his own internal desires. This role earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He received another nomination for his performance in "Five Easy Pieces" (1970), despite the film's lack of commercial success. However, it was his role as detective Jake Gittes in "Chinatown" (1974) that solidified his status as a Hollywood actor.
The 1970s and 1980s were the peak years of Nicholson's career. He delivered outstanding performances in films that earned him numerous accolades. He won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of a psychiatric patient in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), and his role as Jack Torrance in "The Shining" (1980) became one of the most iconic in cinematic history. Nicholson received his second Academy Award for his role in "Terms of Endearment" (1983), and his portrayal of the Joker in "Batman" (1989) further elevated his popularity.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Nicholson's career was less successful, and he received several nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards for worst actor. However, he still delivered remarkable performances, such as his role as Melvin Udall in "As Good as It Gets" (1997), which earned him his third Academy Award. He also received critical acclaim for his role as Frank Costello in "The Departed" (2006).
Nicholson has had a multitude of relationships with famous models and actresses but has only been married once. He claims to have had relationships with over two thousand women, although he has never been included in lists of sex symbols. He has four children from three different women.
Outside of acting, Nicholson is a passionate fan of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and has attended every game for over 25 years. He is also known for his collection of 20th-century artwork.
In January 2017, it was reported by actor Peter Fonda that Nicholson was retiring from acting. However, in February 2017, it was announced that Nicholson would appear in the English-language remake of the film "Toni Erdmann."
