MOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,402, dated June 13, 1893.
7 Application filed September 26, 1892. Serial No.446,950. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Mop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the below described and claimed improved means for holding the mop rags in a mop.
In the drawings forming a part of this specific'ation, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 a plan view illustrating the operation; Fig. 3 a side elevation of broken details from Fig. 2, enlarged; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 11,in Fig. 2.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawings, A is the mop stick, here shown broken away. The end of this stick is provided with a T-head or transverse piece, B, formingone part of the clamp. The other portion of the clamp is shown at 0, consisting of a rod, which is straight the length of the T head and from thence at each end extends backward through open groovesin the ends of the T-head, Fig. 4, converging to the stick, where the free ends are pivotally attached to a lever, D, at c. The base of this lever is forked, so as to straddle the stick, A, each free end of said forked portion being pivotally attached, at s, to a ring, E, on the stick A. This ring, E, is loose on the stick, A, so as to be moved forward by the lever D, when the latter is lowered, as in Fig. 1. Between the ring E and the T-head B, is a spiral spring, F, the expansive tendency of which holds the clamp firmly closed, as'in the position shown in Fig. 1, when the lever D is thrown back. 7
Figs. 2 and 3 show the leverD raised, which action carries the rod 0 forward and open the clamp.
Inthe operation the rags, not here shown, are placed in the clamp, and since the ends of the rod 0 are pivoted between the ends of the compresses the spring F, thus firmly holding the rags, during which action the pivotal points 0 are carried a little below the horizontal plane of the pivoted ends 8, of the lever D, thuslocking the clamp. It will be observed that the upper part of the lever D, from the pivots c, is thrown forward (Fig. 3), so that the forked portion will swing down and straddle the stick, A, the handled portion of the lever resting against the stick.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A mop-stick, comprising a stick proper, provided with the T-head having the grooved ends, forming one portion of the clamp, the rod having a straight portion forming the other part of the clamp and from thence converging rearwardly to the sides of the stick, a lever to which the free ends of said rod are pivoted, a ring loose on the stick, to which the forked ends of the lever are pivoted, and a spring between said ring and the T-head; substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a mop stick provided with a T-head, forming one part of the clamp, a movable rod forming the other part of the clamp, a lever to which the free ends'of said rod are pivoted, said lever being fulcrumed to a movable support on the stick, and a spring exerting a resistance against the lever when the latter is thrown back; substantially as set forth.
In testimony to the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in'the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. STEWART.
